In recent months many Christians in my congregation have been discussing the implications of the new ObamaCare health plan. Knowing that President Obama's "executive order" is not legislative in nature--- it is very possible (and likely) that at least some of our tax dollars will be used to fund abortions.
How should Christians respond to this situation? Is it acceptable for us to refuse to pay our taxes, citing abortion as our primary reasoning? Is this an acceptable form of 'civil disobedience' according to the Scriptures?
With ObamaCare now a law, more and more Christians are having to wrestle through these important spiritual, moral, and biblical issues. If you are just now starting to wade through this subject, I invite you to read this very helpful post from Dr. Al Mohler.
In the end, my personal view is that as Christians we must continue to pay taxes "to Caesar" even if we do not fully approve of what "Caesar" does with the funds. At present there are many things that the federal government uses funds for that are contrary to the basic principles of sacred Scripture.
However, as I see the Scriptures the only time civil disobedience is acceptable is when the government tries to bind your individual conscience by directly commanding actions in your personal life which are contrary to God's Word. i.e. "You cannot worship..." "You cannot pray..." "You cannot speak about Jesus Christ..."
I abhor the idea of the government being in the health insurance business, because I know they are predisposed to the acceptance of abortion. But that doesn't mean I should disobey God and refuse to pay taxes.
